Some late-night street music to weep over

| | »

Google describes this man as an unidentified cellist who occasionally regales passers-by on Der Graben street in Vienna, Austria with his performances. All I know is he damn near drove me to tears, the magnificent, beautifully talented bastard. (The song is Andrea Bocelli’s classic ‘Con te partirò’, or ‘Time to Say Goodbye’.)

I just wish there were a button to mute the background noise, though the crowd appears deservedly respectful.

Your obligatory Maya(not)pocalypse song

| | »

It’s not quite the same as the album version, but it’ll do for the occasion:

Lyrics: (click the [+/-] to open/close →) []

She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we’re better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away

Well she don’t care what it’s worth
She's living like it’s the last night on Earth
The last night on Earth

She’s not waiting on a savior to come
(Halle, Christe)
She’s at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She’s not waiting for anyone

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away

Well she don’t care what it's worth
She's living like it’s the last night on Earth
The last night on Earth

Clock tells her that time is slipping / Slipping away
Tear drop sunshine / Slip slide
Two sides to one feels missing / Too heavy
Something she might be missing / Slipping away
World turns and we get dizzy / The world turns …
Spinning for you / … and we get dizzy
The way it's spinning for me / Slipping away

She’s living, living next week now
You know she’s going to pay it back somehow
She hasn’t been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon then she’ll sleep

You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away / You got to give it away
You got to give it away

She already knows it hurts
She's living like it’s the last night on earth
The last night on earth
Last night on Earth
Last night on Earth

I’ll see y’all tomorrow … or will I? (Yes.)

Christine O’Donnell presents more terrible conservative rap

| | »

It looks like failed Senate candidate Christine “not a witch” O’Donnell has a brilliant idea for turning young voters against President Obama: More aggressively bad conservative rap!

Lyrics: (click the [+/-] to open/close →) []

[source]

He's the 6 trillion dollar man
Hope and Change, it was a scam
Every baby born, owing 50 Grand
To Uncle Sam
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
6 trillion dollar man
Doesn't have a budget plan
Basic economics, is something he doesn't understand
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style

Verse 1

You're telling me he's leading, I'll just tell you, you are blind
During his term, he's golfed over a hundred times
Taken sixty one vacations, is he is out of his mind?
And he's bowing to Saudi Kings, he must be outta of his spine
He's demonizing success with pay your fair share
Which is pure hypocrisy, he's a multi millionaire
Don't you dare claim you built a business from scratch
Because as the ole Obama saying goes, you didn't build that
See he's King George and we compose the colonies
When terrorists attack, he issues them apologies
Added trillions to the debt, cause that's Obama policy
Says be your brother's keeper, but won't help his own in poverty
He's putting off the debt on the backs of your children
Can't create a net job, but promised two million
Obamacare raises taxes by 500 billion
We got to vote him out, if we want the country healing

Chorus X2

He's the 6 trillion dollar man
Hope and Change, it was a scam
Every baby born, owing 50 Grand
To Uncle Sam
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
6 trillion dollar man
Doesn't have a budget plan
Basic economics, is something he doesn't understand
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style

Spreading the wealth, is absolutely not charity
You really want America, with shared propserity?
That means what you earn, you don't get to keep
He's say were going forward, (Off a cliff) yeah leap
But he's a collectivist, so what can you expect
He wants you to sign your check over to the IRS
Biden's countless gaffes are mind numbing to observe
He spelled out JOBS as a three letter word
Obama doesn't like to lead, he'd rather be dancing
40 grand a plate banquets up at Clooney's mansion
See Clint Eastwood made this very evident
Every time you see an empty chair, you see the President
When you're going to get gas, don't you feel you're getting robbed?
Well the keystone pipeline is a shovel ready job
And I'm so tired of this Barack's a hero drama
Seal Team Six got Osama, Not Obama

Chorus X2

He's the 6 trillion dollar man
Hope and Change, it was a scam
Every baby born, owing 50 Grand
To Uncle Sam
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
6 trillion dollar man
Doesn't have a budget plan
Basic economics, is something he doesn't understand
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style

Verse 3

This is the Obama nation, that we're living in
50,000 dollars of debt, per citizen
23,000 million Americans out of job
The door of opportunity, it needs a new knob
He spent 5.4 trillion, so remember this fall
If we reelect Obama, there's no future at all
Cut the spending now, oh yeah and before I forget
Young Americans have to pay back that national debt

Chorus X4

He's the 6 trillion dollar man
Hope and Change, it was a scam
Every baby born, owing 50 Grand
To Uncle Sam
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style
6 trillion dollar man
Doesn't have a budget plan
Basic economics, is something he doesn't understand
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama style
You didn't build that, You didn't build that
That's Obama Style

Of course, the lyrics (if you can bear either hearing or reading them) are little more than a smorgasbord of bullshit Right-wing talking points, not that you’d even need to pay them any attention to figure that out. Because barring anything resembling facts or cogent arguments on their side, what else do these people have?

Of course, that’s just an addendum to the larger point, which is that conservatives need to stop rapping. They really, truly and simply can’t do it. It’s crappy enough at the best of times, but these talentless hacks have managed to turn bad music into a form of torture that would make Dick Cheney blush.

New 007 theme: ‘Skyfall’ by Adele

| | »

I’d never heard of Adele before learning she’s the one who performs the latest James Bond theme, ‘Skyfall’, for the same-named upcoming movie. I can’t say this will make me seek out her other songs, but it certainly has that beloved 007 flair:

Transcript: (click the [+/-] to open/close →) []

This is the end
Hold your breath and count to ten
Feel the earth move and then
Hear my heart burst again

For this is the end
I've drowned and dreamed this moment
So overdue, I owe them
Swept away, I'm stolen

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At skyfall

Skyfall is where we start
A thousand miles and poles apart
When worlds collide, and days are dark
You may have my number, you can take my name
But you'll never have my heart

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At skyfall

Where you go I go,
What you see I see
I know I'll never be me, without the security
Are your loving arms
Keeping me from harm
Put your hand in my hand
And we'll stand

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At skyfall

Let the sky fall
We will stand tall
At skyfall

It’s definitely better than the utterly unmemorable theme for Quantum of Solace (2008), ‘Another Way to Die’, but it still doesn’t hold a candle in my opinion to the best Bond tune of all, Chris Cornell’s epic ‘You Know My Name’ for Casino Royale (2006):

Transcript: (click the [+/-] to open/close →) []

If you take a life, do you know what you'll give
Odds are, you won't like what it is
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me
By the merciless eyes I've deceived

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
Just next in line

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die

The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name

If you come inside, things will not be the same
When you return to my night
If you think you've won
You never saw me change
The game that we have been playing

I've seen diamonds cut through harder men
Than you yourself
but if you must pretend
You may meet your end

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die

The coldest blood runs through my veins

Try to hide your hand
Forget how to feel
(Forget how to feel)
Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel
(A spin of the wheel)

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die

The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name
(You know my name)
You know my name
(You know my name)
you know my name!
You know my name!
You know my name!

Doesn’t that just get the blood flowing for some more Bond?

Reince Priebus
  • Wow: All nine bystanders who were injured during the recent Empire State Building shooting were hit by police. (But I’m sure random nobodies with conceal carry licenses would do much better!)

  • This year marks a new all-time record low for Arctic sea ice extent. But I’m sure it’s totally just a fluke, of course.

Anti-American principal disses sacred Lee Greenwood song!

    | | »
    “GOD BLESS THE USA”
    FUCK YEEAAAH!!!11!

In which the American Family Association’s latest self-righteous hissy fit can best be summarized as “how dare that principal refuse to brainwash those kids!”:

Greta Hawkins, principal of Edna Cohen School (PS 90) in New York, has decided on her own that kindergarteners displaying American patriotism would be offensive.

She has single-handedly banned Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" from the graduation ceremonies scheduled for June 20.

It doesn't matter that students in five classes spent months learning the patriotic song, or that the students practiced waving American flags in unison to promote love of country.

According to The New York Post, it was to be the rousing finale of their musical show at the June 20 commencement. The kids, dressed up for their big day, would each wave a tiny American flag - which, as the lyrics proclaim, "still stands for freedom." But Hawkins marched in on a recent rehearsal and ordered a CD playing the anthem to be shut off, staffers said.

But Justin Bieber's flirty song about teen romance, "Baby," was deemed a fine selection for the show. Hawkins had no problem with 5-year-olds singing lines such as, "Are we an item? Girl, quit playing."

In response to public pressure, New York Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott removed Beiber's inappropriate song from the program, but stood by the principal's anti-American rebuff of Greenwood's "God Bless the USA."

Anyone who thinks kids should aspire to better than playground-level “WE’RE TEH BESTEST!!!11!” mindless cheerleading are actually commie traitors, because being a True AmericanTM means always appealing to the lowest common denominator while being blithely intolerant of any other opinions. Got it.

I’m not sure why the AFA is kvetching about the inclusion of the Bieber song; it’s just replacing one piece of audible excrement with another. Though, to be fair, that tween catnip is still better than Greenwood’s masturbatory musical diarrhea.

(Note: For more insanity, read the NYPost’s comment section. Remember: These people vote.)

R.E.M. calls it quits: Single-video tribute

    | | »

The news is in: R.E.M. has “decided to call it a day”. I barely know their music (and know nothing at all about the group, itself), but nonetheless, here’s a tiny little tribute with my favorite song of theirs:

    Lyrics: (click the [+/-] to expand/collapse →) []

    [Verse 1]
    Oh, life is bigger
    It’s bigger than you
    And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
    The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I’ve said too much
    I set it up
    That’s me in the corner
    That’s me in the spotlight
    Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
    I haven’t said enough

    [Chorus 1]
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

    [Verse 2]
    Every whisper
    Of every waking hour
    I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no, I’ve said too much
    I set it up
    Consider this
    Consider this
    The hint of the century
    Consider this
    The slip that brought me
    To my knees failed
    What if all these fantasies
    Come flailing around
    Now I've said too much

    [Chorus 2]
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

    [Bridge]
But that was just a dream
    That was just a dream

    [Verse 3]
    That’s me in the corner
    That’s me in the spotlight
    Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
    I haven’t said enough

    [Outro Chorus]
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
    Try, cry, why try?
    That was just a dream
Just a dream, just a dream, dream

    It’s the Gays’ Fault!

    | | »

Here’s a funny parody-song performed during last month’s Stockholm Pride and broadcast over Swedish State Television. (On the off-chance that you aren’t fluent in Nordic tongues, be sure to click the “CC” button for subtitles.)

    Lyrics: (click the [+/-] to expand/collapse →) []

It’s like this: The singalong has become shallow! It has become filthy! FILTHY FILTHY FILTHY, like me and my congregation like to put it. I think it’s unpleasant because there is humping and there is moaning! And when you are up there on stage, even I get sinful thoughts and that’s when it’s gone too far! We need this to end! We need to bring in more morals! MORALS MORALS MORALS! We need to have enough morals for double-standards!

But it’s not your fault, Måns. It’s not your fault and it’s not your publisher’s fault. I would like to put it like this …

    Over our entire Earth …
    (Oh yeah! Oh yeah!)
Disasters, terror and murder occurs, believe my word …
    (Oh my! Oh my!)
But we who walk with Jesus still bear no responsibility
Because the root to all evil isn’t us

    No, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    No, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
It’s written in the Bible that it’s the gays’ fault!
I don’t know which line, verse, chapter or part,
But somewhere in here, it’s written that it’s the gays’ fault!

    The war in Afghanistan?
    The gays’ fault!
    The dictatorship in Iran?
    The gays’ fault!
Earthquakes, floods and all other horrors?
And [?], Saab and Volvo aren’t even Swedish anymore?

    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The world is on fire
    And it’s the gays’ fault!
I stole office supplies from work and somehow get the feeling
    That it’s the gays’ fault!

    Divorces and alcoholism?
    The gays’ fault!
    Parking enforcement and atheism?
    The gays’ fault!
That kids these days don’t know how to behave?
That the Eurovision song contest never seems to end?

    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    Nothing makes sense …
    And it’s the gays’ fault!
My troubled youth has left me mentally ill
    But my family agrees …
    That it’s the gays’ fault!

    Crazy fundamentalism?
    The gays’ fault!
Every schism in the history of the world?
    The gays’ fault!
In the name of religion, we engage in wars, kill and fight,
But we bear no responsibility for this …

    Because it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
We can all agree that it’s the gays’ fault!
One could think it’s Satan himself playing a trick on us …
But even he gets off since
    It’s the gays’ fault!

The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!

    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    Everything that is wrong …
    It’s the gays’ fault!
I have sat in front of my computer until my neck has gone stiff …
Somehow I get the feeling …
    It’s the gays’ fault!

    Yes, it’s the gaaaays’ faaault!
    (The gaaaays’ faaault!)
    The gaaaays’ faaault!
    (The gaaaays’ faaault!)
    Everything that gives piece …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
All the poverty, all the wrong morals
All the rain and all the fights
There is no doubt that …
    It’s the gays’ fault!

    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    The gays’ fault!
    (The gays’ fault!)
    Everything that is wrong …
    Yes, it’s the gays’ fault!
All the poverty, all the wrong morals
All the rain and all the fights
There is no doubt that …
    It’s the gays’ fault!

    The gaaaaaaaaaays’ faaaaaaaaault!
(The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ … The gays’ …)
(The gays’ … The gays’ …)
    The gays’ fault!

Now, play the video, close your eyes, and imagine that it’s U.S. Christians who are singing. Funny how that works, eh?

My evening at the U2 concert: Assholes, rain and spilled fries

    | | »
    U2 360°: The Tour

I really hate Murphy’s Law. Which makes it all the more infuriating how it seems to love me. If you’ll allow me a few moments to engage in what can probably be classified as White Whine material, I’ve got some venting to do.

I had so very much been looking forward to this day. Which is probably why I ended up so unbelievably pissed off. Serves me right for daring to get my hopes up about something for once, I suppose.

The day started off well enough. Got up at noon with just enough time to pack and head into downtown Montreal. My mother parked us in an old parking for her workplace, and the half-an-hour-or-so walk to the actual stadium was initially more than paid for when we saw how nearly every other parking space in the vicinity had been “reserved” for the U2 concert … at prices ranging from $20 to $40. Even airport parking isn’t that much of a rip-off.

We waited a few hours in the car, though, rather than roast in the sun at the tailgate party surrounding the stadium. Mom thought it would also be a good idea to take me on a little guided tour of the Kraft Foods plant where she works, and so we went. I don’t have much to say about it, honestly; it’s big, noisy, complicated and busy, and I came out smelling of cheese (among other things). We then returned to the car for some R&R (ie. reading & resting) until 5:30 PM or so, at which point we decided to start heading up to the Hippodrome where the stadium had been erected.

We eventually made our way through the lines, and before too long, we caught our first sight of the concert area:

    The “Claw”
“The Claw”. Looks a whole lot bigger in person.

    * UPDATE: My use of “scare/sarcastic quotes” for ‘rape’ comes from my initial ignorance of the accusation that Assange had not quit intercourse with a woman who had asked him to stop. Having paid only intermittent attention to the case, I was under the impression that the charges against Assange were limited to a broken condom and not using one at all, which do not, in themselves, constitute rape. If this claim of continued sex despite the woman’s demand to stop is true, then that, itself, is certainly rape.
