So, American politics are torn between one party that tries its very hardest to destroy the country with its dishonesty and demagogy, and another party that just lets them out of sheer spinelessness. Feel like emigrating yet?

• Stupid column by Keith Koffler at Politico argues that celebrating President Obama’s birthday (August 04, yesterday) is akin to a national holiday. And that Organizing for America (OFA) raising a few bucks by reminding supporters about Obama’s birthday is the same as establishing a dictatorship. Or something.

• Doggycide: Cop goes to fenced-in, off-leash dog park with his German shepherd (on a leash), cop’s dog starts playing roughly with a Siberian husky, cop shoots second dog, which dies soon after.

• Missouri passes a (hopefully short-lived) proposition rejecting healthcare reform’s mandate to purchase health insurance. Quote: “"The citizens of the Show-Me State don't want Washington involved in their health care decisions," said Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, one of the sponsors of the legislation that put Proposition C on the August ballot.” Yes, because the corporations are obviously doing such a good job of managing healthcare coverage so far, aren’t they?

• Report: “Scientists find world’s oldest living prehistoric creatures in Dumfriesshire, Scotland: shrimp that have hardly changed in over 200 million years.” Ray Comfort: “See? Nothing’s changed! No evolution! Creationism wins!” Sigh.

• Doggycide #2: Cop searches a family home under a warrant, shoots and kills innocent half-pitbull mix inside a fenced-in front porch. Naturally, found nothing incriminating in the residence.

• Excellent analysis by Veritas at Log of Veritas on Judge Walker’s ruling against Prop 8 – and why it’s not over yet as the case will almost certainly be appealed at the Supreme Court, at which point the chances of passage will be unfathomable.
