More flag fetishism: WND vs. Obamanation!

| »

Here’s another case of how Republicans modifying the American flag is patriotic, and anyone else who changes anything about the old multicolored piece of cloth are commies and traitors. Someone on eBay is selling American flags that feature the Obama’s face instead of the usual stars. You can guess how the WorldNutDaily is taking it, primarily by which quotes of wingnut outrage they display:

American flag with Obama’s picture A seller on eBay has been offering American flags with the stars removed from the blue field and President Barack Obama's face inserted, and outraged bloggers have promised to track the banners down.

[…]

[Atlas Rush blogger Pam] Gellar had this to say: "There is something terribly terribly wrong with this. It's an Obamanation. Skin crawling."

[…]

On Gellar's site, another commenter had this to say: "This is just like Mao Tse Tung's cult of personality. I wonder if we'll soon see people carrying massive posters of 'the messiah' as he brings the country to utter economic ruin and geopolitical impotence?"

This is ridiculous. All this is, is one guy hoping to make a quick buck by selling an item that’s certain to garner attention. It’s silly, yes, but entirely legit, and certainly nothing to get outraged over. It’s not like it was commissioned by the White House, for crying out loud.

But that won’t stop these self-righteous wingnuts from being overcome with delusions of authority, of course:

"To whoever is currently manufacturing and selling those flags..... I will personally and legally hunt each of you down for the sole purpose of making citizens arrests and prosecuting each and every one of you to the fullest extend of the law under U.S. Code pertaining to the flag of the United States of America," wrote one participant in a forum at Atlas Shrugs, where blogger Pamela Gellar posted the images.

"Understand this.... you have every right in the world to support the person you voted for and I will stand right in front of you in the line of fire to defend that right. But the instant you put a single man on a higher pedestal than the law, whatever games you are playing are over and you lose..... maybe forever."

What a sanctimonious asswipe. Reality check: no federal laws are being breached here. You can’t prosecute someone for violating the U.S. Flag Code, and if you do indeed carry out citizen’s arrests, you’re the one who’ll end up in jail for assault (which would give me nothing but a good larf). Second: get a fucking grip. It’s just a flag. A piece of cloth with colored stripes, a blue square and some white dimples. If this is something worth going to jail for (for that assault thing I just mentioned), then you seriously need to reassess your priorities in life.

Thankfully, not everyone seems to have lost their minds over this:

Another writer called the flag a "novelty," and explained it would be classified in the same category as a bathing suit or a shirt, "even though it mimics the flag design."

"Get over it, it's tacky but meaningless," wrote another. "I am going to go clean my guns."

I dunno about that last bit, but his point about this “flag” being no more than a tacky but innocuous novelty is dead-on. You really gotta wonder how wingnuts can get their panties in a twist over absolutely anything. They truly are incompatible with common sense.

They’re also incompatible with irony. For example, the WND is now advertising their sales of “patriotic flags without Obama's face” (exact wording). And that’s apart from their tea-stained flags, of course.

Lulz.
