Just what in the hell is going on in Arizona? Is the state just absolutely crawling with flea-infested bigots? Or are they just too damn stupid to know any better and realize that word (and video) of their actions will leak out and attract some decidedly unfavorable attention? First, Gov. Jan Brewer passes that infamous anti-immigration law; since then, things have only gone downhill rapidly: teachers with foreign accents being reassigned, the whole “whiten the Darkies on that school mural!” affair, and any number of other blatantly intolerant events. This time, though, one crank has apparently decided to drop the racism angle and focus on homophobia instead. From Al Krieger, speaking at a Memorial Day address at the Desert Lawn Cemetery in Yuma, Ariz.:

I cannot believe that a bunch of lacy-drawered, limp-wristed people could do what those men have done in the past.

Classy feller, isn’t he? That southern drawl almost makes him sound charming. I do wonder why he limited himself to calling gay soldiers “people”, though. I mean, if he’s gonna reveal himself for the complete flaming, bigoted ass that he is, why not go all the way and just call ’em “faggots”? Be consistent, man.

Now, just in case you thought that was stupid enough, get a load of what he said afterwards when interviewed by a local NBC station, where he defended his remarks in this stunningly brain-dead manner:

I am reluctant to compare myself to George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, but I did get some feedback on what I said, and I don’t think I said anything different than what they would have said. […] We need solid, strong men, not pacifists, to fight those battles.

Yes, I can just imagine ol’ General Washington or Honest Abe walking around, declaring how those damned frilly-dressed gays can’t hold guns. It’s in the history books, after all, amirite?
