FAIL Quote of the Day: Another pop idol speaks out against sex

Lady Gaga
A role model, this is not
[source: Last.fm]

I’ve never exactly liked Lady Gaga. I (used to) have nothing against the woman herself; only, her stage appearance varies between “misshapen critter from hell” to over-sexualized bimbo, her mind-numbingly bad and generic songs could do with a generous infusion of a little thing called “talent”, and as far as I’m concerned, she’s just another key to the oncoming downfall of society as we know it. (Okay, that last one might have been a bit hyperbolic.) But now, she’s just dug herself into a particularly deep hole with this excerpt from an interview in which she tells us about how she’s on a self-imposed sex ban – and that her fans ought to be as well:

"I remember the cool girls when I was growing up. Everyone started to have sex. But it's not really cool anymore to have sex all the time. It's cooler to be strong and independent."

Right – enjoying sex means you’re a weak and mindless little girl, whereas renouncing the ways of carnal pleasure automatically makes you proud and independent – and cool.

This sort of reasoning is more than merely pathetic; it’s insulting and detrimental, leading more influenceable girls to believing that they can only be strong, independent and socially-accepted if they just say “no” to sex, and especially, to thinking that those who do engage in sexual relations, for love or for the fun of it, are sex-addicted sluts who are too frail and impressionable to stand strong for themselves and renounce their oh-so-evil ways (of having and enjoying sex). Saying “no” to sex, even when the time is right, simply because a self-important pop star/teen idol herself chooses not to have any and tells others not to as well, is not being “strong and independent” – in fact, it’s the exact opposite.

To drive the point home, here’s what Jen from Blag Hag, one of these supposedly “weak and dependent” girls who have lots of sex, has to say about Gaga’s comment:

Oh, and kudos on the slut shaming. Having sex all the time isn't cool. You know what? I have sex all the time because I like having sex. In fact, I wish I got more sex. I'm not trying to impress anyone or conform to societal norms; I just like fucking every once in a while. What a shame that you don't understand that concept - the sex you did have must not have been that fulfilling if you were just doing it to fit in.

Well said.
