Of course, you'll remember back in early May when Maine legalized gay marriage to mass applause. As beautiful as that is, it's now being threatened by the Maine version of California's infamous Proposition 8, ironically (or unoriginally?) titled "Proposition 1", which is on the ballot for November. Naturally, conservative forces and related cronies are piling up in support of this bill, so once again it's the task of thinking, rational people to stand behind this bill and gay and lesbian couple's inherent right to marry whoever the hell they want, without gender-based discrimination (which is all prohibiting gay marriage amounts to, anyway).
Greta Christina has an excellent blog post up telling you why you should care about this, and what you can do about it; you can also visit the official anti-Prop 1 website and declare your support for gay marriage there. You can also, of course, donate any cash you have to spare – movements need money like anything else in life, and the general rule states that the more funding, the better.
Of course, what's the best thing you can do to spread awareness and build forces? Spread the word! Twitter it, put it on your social networking profiles, blog it, or revert to that archaic communication medium known as "talking to people in person" – whatever you do, just spread the word.
The right is already gaining momentum in their efforts to overthrow gay marriage in Maine. For the love of all things right, don't let them. Do whatever you have to, as soon as you can, to overthrow this unjust travesty-of-a-proposition.
