Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) |
From wingnut extraordinaire Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), attacking House Democrats over their opposition to the “Protect Life Act” (aka “Let Women Die” bill) with this brilliant bit of reasoning:
And for my colleagues across the aisle who say that this is a misogynist bill, nobody has ever fought more for the rights of women than I have. But 50 percent of the unborn babies that are being aborted are females. So the misogyny comes for those who promote — promote the killing of unborn babies. That's where the misogyny comes in, Madam Speaker, it doesn't come in from our trying to protect taxpayers' money from being spent on killing unborn children.
So, raving ignorantly about public funds being used on abortions (which they aren’t and haven’t been for decades) is pro-feminism, and terminating pregnancies in equal measures for male and female fetuses on average* is anti-woman.
I’d say you can’t make this sort of silliness up, but then, that’s exactly what Republicans have been doing for a while, now.
* To be pedantic, I can’t find any statistics on sex-selective abortion in the U.S., though I would guess – or, at least, hope – that no such bias exists amongst Americans and Westerners in general.
