What’s the difference between religion and mythology?

| »

A bit simplistically stated, but generally fitting:

“The only real difference between religion and mythology” / “God: followers are alive”; “Zeus: followers are dead”

Strictly speaking, though, there are plenty of living folks who adhere to ancient mythologies or believe in otherwise culturally extinct deities (such as pagans, unless I am very much mistaken). In the end, it should rather read, “Religion: What I believe in; Mythology: What you believe in”.
