Why do bad things happen to religious people, too?

Religious folks like to believe that following their chosen god(s) gives them divine protection in their lives. But then, why are religious folks just as regularly affected by misfortune, disasters and tragedies as non-believers? TheThinkingAtheist on YouTube examines this:

It’s a nice feeling to think that there’s a cosmic force watching over you and sparing you from harm, but it’s all a lie intended to promote religious faith. There is nothing between you and emotional/physical injury, other than your own actions and common sense.
