I happen to enjoy PZ’s “Sunday Sacrilege” feature, where every week he presents and then tears apart some notion or concept held dear by theists and religion. This week, he talks about souls and their nonexistence, and gives us this inspiring passage to remember:
If the soul is an imaginary fantasy, then Mozart's music, Michaelangelo's sculptures, Picasso's paintings, the Wright brothers' plane, every work of art and technology produced by people whose names have been lost to us, every child, every dream, has been created by us, mere mortal flesh unled by a magic puppeteer in the sky, unaided by angels or spirits. I find that wonderful.
Absolutely beautiful and true. This goes directly against all those ignorami who continually claim that atheism means looking at the world without joy, without beauty, without hope, without wonder. Those of us who live without God, gods or other beliefs in supernatural fluff know that such is simply false: the world, though crazy, purposeless, difficult and at times painful, is filled with beauty and wonder – none of which takes any sort of otherworldly guidance or power to exist.
We are responsible for our own creations and achievements. Let’s live it as such.
