U2’s Bono, singing and still lookin’ cool |
I’m getting pretty tired of hearing critics and ankle-biters growl and bark at Bono simply for daring to stand up for and speak out about what he believes in. (And, no, I am not just irrationally and fanboyishly jumping to the defense of my favorite rock singer and key member of my favorite rock group.) The fact of the matter is, if you have the time and the ability to stand up for an issue you believe in, and you have the outreach to be able to rally up people for whatever cause you’re passionate about, then quite frankly, you’d be a massive fool not to take advantage of it, whether it’s for starving kids in Africa, disaster relief in Haiti, humanitarian help in Darfur, and so on.
It’s just the right thing to do, as far as I’m concerned. If you can change something for the better, then fuck those who think you’re annoying and do it anyway. So, understandably, hearing this sort of silliness from the likes of AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson isn’t going to win him my respect or affections:
“I don’t tell everybody they should give money – they can’t afford it. When I was a working man I didn’t want to go to a concert for some bastard to talk down to me that I should be thinking of some kid in Africa.”
He then offered some words of advice to his fellow rockers: “I’m sorry mate, do it yourself, spend some of your own money and get it done. It just makes me angry. I become all tyrannical.”
If Johnson can’t comprehend the difference between being a preachy ass, and simply speaking up for, and being passionate about, what one believes in, then perhaps he ought to drink a cup of STFU until he learns it. Once again, we have here another example showing how, quite often, you are what you criticize.
