It’s so fun and useful when bigots bravely expose themselves

| »

Now that the movement to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is finally underway after so long, the slime is truly coming out of the woodwork to rally up and stand fast against this threat to their precious ignorance and intolerance. Focus on the Family (headed by the odious James Dobson) has already come out loud & proud in their opposition to DADT being repealed (in addition to wishing that homosexuality be criminalized altogether), and now, the Family Research Council (what is it with Religious Right bigots and their ever-so-ironic name choices?) has joined them in their bold quest to outlaw whatever sexual orientation that makes them go “ewww!”. (Which is, of course, the sole foundation they have for their distaste of gay people, other than the Bible.)

Here’s the video of a Hardball with Chris Matthews interview with a FRC spokesman, Peter Sprigg, who tries to debate how and why gays shouldn’t be allowed on the military, drawing on all the standard bullshit arguments: there’d be sexual tension, there could be sexual assaults, it would destroy unit cohesion, blah blah blah. These people really can’t ever come up with anything new, can they?

I particularly like how Mr. Sarvis argued his position in this debate, informing the ever-ignorant Sprigg how it’s all a question of professionalism and that gay soldiers aren’t controlled by their dicks any more than are their straight comrades. But the best and most revealing part is at the very end; here’s a quick transcript:

MATTHEWS: ‘Do you think we should outlaw gay behavior?‘

SPRIGG: ‘Well, I think certainly –’

MATTHEWS: ‘I'm just asking, should we outlaw gay behavior?’

SPRIGG: ‘I think the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas which overturned the sodomy laws in this country was wrongly decided. I think there would be a place in this country for criminal sanctions against homosexual behavior.’

MATTHEWS: ‘So we should outlaw gay behavior?’

SPRIGG: Yes!

Well, there you have it, nice and clear: the Religious Right (or a large faction of it, anyway) wants gays to be prosecuted as criminals.

How pleasant these people are when they reveal their true colors.
