Christian bigots resort to their usual dirty tricks

| »

The Religious Right aren’t particularly known for playing honestly and fairly, and this story is yet another stark example of how low they have no problem sinking to in order to try and fight against acceptance and equality. First, take a look at these two photos, below:

Not to sound shallow, but … the couple on the left are as hideous as the ones on the right are hawt.

Bit of a stark comparison, no? What’s the story behind these photos, you ask? Well, a Florida judge recently granted a lesbian couple (the ladies in the right pic) the right to adopt a 1-year-old boy they had been foster parents to, citing how the infant was “happy and thriving” in the loving care of its gay parents. Sounds like a rather simple story with a happy ending, doesn’t it?

Well, yeah, it does. Which is why the Religious Right couldn’t stand to let it be, of course, outraged as they were at the idea of a child growing up in the home of those evil perverted gayz. The Florida Family Policy Council of Orlando (following in the Christian-conservative tradition of ironic names) fired off an email alert to its members with the headline “FL judge violates law, places child in homosexual adoption” and, beneath it, plastering the grotesque caricature of a lesbian couple (with the usual stereotypes, on the left above) an possibly one of the most dishonest, obvious and disgusting smear jobs imaginable. Because, of course, when they can’t attack the fact that the child is obviously happy and loved, they crank the ad hominem machine up to 200%.

That judge's ruling — which focused solely on the child's well-being — enraged some on the religious right.

Why? Because the little boy's adoptive parents are gay.

[…]

"Arrogant judicial activism" was how the finger-waggers at Orlando's Florida Family Policy Council described the ruling in an alert it sent out to its members last week.

And to make their point about just how frightening this ruling was, the Policy Council included a photograph of the couple — a strange and androgynous-looking duo, one with bleached skin and both with mullet haircuts. The couple look so odd (you literally can't tell whether they are male or female) that one might wonder how any judge could place a young child with such a disturbing-looking duo.

Except the judge didn't.

The abnormal-looking couple that the Policy Council chose to illustrate this story is not the same couple granted the right to adopt the child.

No, the two-woman couple awarded custody of the 1-year-old — South Florida trade-show executive Vanessa Alenier and her partner, Melanie Leon — look more like J.Crew models: all-American with catalogue clothes and smiles.

The picture that the Policy Council chose was a grotesque caricature.

These are the dirty tactics of Christianity's far-right warriors.

Of course, the reason why they so quickly and happily resort to these sorts of loathsome tactics is that they’re losing, and they know it. Florida is the last state in the U.S. that still holds a legal ban on gay adoptions, and mountain public opposition is assuring that it will be repealed before long. The bigots from the Religious Right simply have nothing else to turn to, than cheap tricks and scummy defamation.
