And actually, the title isn’t an allegation, a claim, or even a guess: it’s a fact, one that has just been demonstrated with chilling clarity during a recent vote.
Here’s the story: when female employees of overseas defense contractors (such as those operating in the Middle-East) suffer sexual discrimination, assault or rape, current stipulations in their employment contracts routinely deny them the right to bring their cases to court and place charges against those who wronged and violated them. Instead, their contracts state that they can only ever be heard in “private arbitration”, which, I presume, is just code-speak for “legal dead-end”.
If you agree these stipulations are absolutely abhorrent, your mind and heart are on the right track. And so, apparently, is Democratic Senator Al Franken of Minnesota, who successfully passed a measure aimed at withholding defense contracts from such companies that basically order their employees to STFU when it comes to sexual assault, discrimination and rape. So far, so good.
The problem starts to appear when you notice that this measure, which is perhaps the most obviously agreeable thing we’ve seen in recent years, was only passed by a relatively slim margin as the votes tallied 68 to 30.
I say it’s a “relatively” slim margin, because any more than 0 votes for “nay” would be testament to these nay-sayers’ loathsome lack of morals and compassion.
Which, I suppose, is only fitting in this case, considering that every single one of those who voted against this measure aimed at allowing rape victims to have their day in court and at punishing rapists, were Republicans. Every last one of them.
Brings yet another level or irony to their support and embracing of “family values”, doesn’t it? When three fucking quarters of Republicans are all for rapists walking free and their victims just being swept under a rug somewhere to quietly suffer in their own misery?
Disgusting fuckwits. My loathing for these amoral ghouls intensifies every day, and every time I hear of such a horrendous thing.
