Just yesterday exploded the story that Hemant Mehta, or the (exceedingly appropriately-named) Friendly Atheist, was being attacked by the nutjob Illinois Family Institute and one of its snarling lemmings, Laurie Higgins. This is obviously nothing more than a common case of anti-atheist discrimination – only what makes this one remarkable is how ridiculous their choice of an atheist to go after is, considering Hemant likely doesn't have a single enemy, even amongst the fanatical realm.
Well, now Higgins has issued an open letter to Hemant, criticizing his criticism (and the circle begins ...) of their original attack, in which they both told parents to retract their children from Hemant's high school math classes, and encouraged Hemant's coworkers to rise against him and his mean, ungodly thoughts and opinions and basically have him ostracized, and logically, fired.
Now, Higgins is basically repeating the same ill-founded and ill-cogent claims about Hemant and his character (because, you see, she has nothing to say about his actual teachings, so she has to rely on criticizing his beliefs and how they might affect schoolchildren in his classroom to open their poor little minds). Hemant defends himself (even though, as he notes, he definitely has no obligation to) and, naturally, does wonderfully at repelling the absurd charges against him, all the while keeping with his usual respectful tone he's known and admired for. (Seriously, you have to wonder how the guy does it.)
It's a fun read, both if you like laughing at idiotic claims, and at said claims being utterly destroyed by someone Higgins isn't even fit to lick the shoes of.
